My Experience with Apple AirPods 4: A Wireless Journey to Convenience, Comfort and Sound Quality

A couple of weeks ago, I finally made the decision to upgrade my earbuds. I had been eyeing the Apple AirPods 4 for a while, and I decided it was time to give them a shot. After testing a few other brands in the past, I was curious to see how these new AirPods would compare. I've always been a fan of Apple products, but would the AirPods 4 live up to the hype? Well, after using them for a solid amount of time, here’s my honest experience, from unboxing to testing them out in real life.

The Unboxing Experience: Simple Yet Elegant

First things first, unboxing the AirPods 4 felt like opening a gift. As soon as I pulled off the lid of the sleek, minimalistic box, I was met with the earbuds in their compact, glossy charging case. Right away, I could tell these were designed with the kind of attention to detail that Apple is known for. The case is small, portable, and has that satisfying magnetic closure. It fit easily in the palm of my hand and slid perfectly into my pocket.

One of the first things I noticed was how familiar the AirPods looked. If you've owned any of the earlier AirPods models, you’ll feel right at home with the design. They’re still the same iconic white earbuds with the slim stem, but there’s a subtle refinement in the shape. The stem is slightly thinner, and the buds themselves are more ergonomic. For someone like me with smaller ears, this slight redesign was a welcome change. The AirPods 4 felt snug, but not too tight, sitting comfortably in my ears without any discomfort, even after long listening sessions.

First Use: Connecting to My Devices Was a Breeze

Since I’m deep into the Apple ecosystem—my phone, tablet, and laptop are all Apple products—connecting the AirPods 4 was effortless. I opened the case near my iPhone, and just like that, I was prompted to connect. A quick tap, and I was ready to go. The connection was instant and seamless. I didn’t have to fiddle around with Bluetooth settings or worry about syncing issues, which is always a relief. Apple has really nailed this part of the experience, and it was such a smooth start.

I immediately tried out the "Hey Siri" function to test voice activation. I didn’t even have to tap the earbuds; I just said the magic words, and Siri was up and running. I was able to adjust the volume, skip songs, and even check the weather, all with my voice. It felt like magic every time I used it.

Sound Quality: Surprisingly Full and Clear

Now, let’s get to the most important part: the sound. To be honest, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I’ve always thought AirPods were great for basic listening, but I didn’t think they could hold up against some of the more premium earbuds on the market. But boy, was I wrong.

Right from the first song I played, I could tell these were a step up from what I was used to. I listened to a variety of genres—rock, pop, and even some jazz—and the AirPods 4 delivered a rich, well-rounded sound. The bass was solid without being overpowering, and the mids and highs were crystal clear. Vocals, in particular, stood out as incredibly sharp, making podcasts and calls sound crisp and natural. I was genuinely impressed with the depth and clarity of the audio, especially considering these are compact earbuds.

I’m not an audiophile by any means, but for someone who values a great listening experience during my daily commute or while working, these earbuds hit the mark. Whether I was listening to a booming bass-heavy track or a podcast full of dialogue, everything sounded balanced and full.

Active Noise Cancellation: A Real Game-Changer

A feature I was really excited to test was Active Noise Cancellation (ANC). I’ve always used wireless earbuds for casual listening, but I’ve been yearning for something that could help block out the noise of the city when I’m trying to focus or relax. I’ve used noise-canceling over-ear headphones in the past, but I wasn’t sure if these small earbuds could deliver the same experience.

I was pleasantly surprised. While they don’t completely block out all external sound like over-ear headphones would, the ANC on the AirPods 4 does a great job of reducing ambient noise. On a noisy subway ride, for instance, I could barely hear the chatter or the clanking of the train. It didn’t give me complete silence, but it certainly made it much easier to concentrate on my music or a podcast. For those who need quiet while traveling or working, I think this feature will be a huge benefit.

And then there’s Transparency Mode—a feature that allows you to hear outside sounds while still listening to your music. I used it when I was walking around my neighborhood and found it incredibly useful. I could still enjoy my favorite tunes while being fully aware of my surroundings, whether it was hearing a car honking or a conversation happening nearby. It’s a great feature for staying safe while enjoying your music outdoors.

Comfort: No More Ear Fatigue

One of my biggest concerns with wireless earbuds has always been comfort. Many times, earbuds either feel too bulky or they don’t stay in place, but the AirPods 4 fit perfectly for me. They didn’t feel heavy or awkward in my ears, and I could wear them for hours without any discomfort. This is particularly important because I often wear earbuds during long work sessions or on long walks. The AirPods 4 strike that balance of being light and comfortable, while still offering a snug fit that feels secure.

I also noticed that the earbuds don’t get irritating even when I wear them for extended periods. I can’t say the same for every pair of earbuds I’ve tried—sometimes, they start feeling uncomfortable after a while, especially with the pressure they put on my ears. But these felt like they were designed to be worn for the long haul.

Battery Life: More Than Enough for Daily Use

Battery life is always something I keep an eye on with wireless earbuds. Apple claims the AirPods 4 offer around 6 hours of listening time, which is pretty standard for most high-quality earbuds. In my experience, I’ve found that 6 hours is more than enough for my daily needs. I typically use them for 2-3 hours at a time, and by the time I’m ready to charge them, the battery is still holding up well.

The charging case also gives me more than enough backup. With over 24 hours of total listening time, I never felt like I was running out of juice unexpectedly. If I ever forget to charge them, a quick 15-minute charge provides about 1.5 hours of listening time, which has saved me more than once when I was rushing out the door.

Final Thoughts: Worth the Investment?

After spending a couple of weeks with the AirPods 4, I can confidently say that they’ve earned their place as my go-to wireless earbuds. From the seamless integration with my Apple devices to the superb sound quality and practical features like ANC and Transparency Mode, these earbuds tick all the boxes. They’re comfortable, sound great, and provide a premium experience that justifies the price tag.

If you’re someone who already uses Apple products and wants a reliable, high-quality set of wireless earbuds, I can wholeheartedly recommend the Apple AirPods 4. Whether you’re commuting, working, or just enjoying your favorite music, they’re a solid choice. In my opinion, they’re the best blend of convenience, sound quality, and comfort you can get in a pair of wireless earbuds right now.
